An account of my first experience of the world of work at the age of fouteen. It was not a good experience and, consequently, did not last too long!

I once remember Bunclody being Newtownbarry and as a child I loved going for a walk with my mum and dad. We used to pick flowers and blackberries to sell them. We used to put stones in the bottom of them to make more money. I went to the national school and I was a devil because the teacher said an Irish word and I got vexed and climbed out the window and went home. Children were let play outside until late. We played hopscotch and skipping and blind man's bluff. We felt very safe that time. But when I was young I never had a lot of confidence in myself because the teacher left me behind and they didn't care that time. They used to tie my hands to the chair, they didn't want to know.
